Alaska Yurt Rental Description of China Poot Bay.
China Poot Bay yurt is located at the Head of the Coalition Trail in China Poot Bay beside the State Park Camp Ground. There is a narrow channel leading to this site and the access is during high tide. It is best that consult with a water taxi operation or a local person familiar with the channel before attempting to bring a boat in yourself. The day breeze on Kachemak Bay also needs to be factored in when planning your trip in.
There is a protected anchorage and a small gravel beach that makes a good landing site.
The yurt is furnished with a wood stove and three full size-sleeping platforms. The beds are set up in a semi circle around the wood stove. We leave an axe and a handsaw in the yurt and we also provide split firewood when we maintain the yurts once a week or so .If there is no firewood cut there is a lot in the area. We ask that you leave dry kindling in the yurt for the next group in.
The water source for China Poot Bay is currently flowing but dries up in late summer. You will have to bring water for your stay with you if there has been a long dry spell. The water source comes off the rocks on the far side of the beach at low tide only. Listen for the flow at low tide. We ask that you cook at the fire pit or on the beach to keep the food smells away from the yurt. There is a pulley to hoist your food up in a tree when you are away from the yurt.
We will leave a first aid kit and emergency flares as well as a noisemaker in the yurt. There are black bears in the park and the occasional brown bear. The bears are generally not accustomed to people and there have been no reports of garbage bear problems yet. China Poot has a lot of bear traffic because it is near a salmon stream. Use common sense when in bear country, keeping cooking away from your camp site when ever possible. The noisemakers and the flares can deter a curious bear. The yurt has 350 lbs per square inch puncture resistance on the outer cover and they need to get through 3 layers and lattice to get through the wall. You would have lots of time to scare them away with flares and noisemakers. It�s a good idea to make noise on the trail so as not to surprise the wild life.
Be very careful with fire during the dry times. Keep campfires in the fire ring or on the beach. If there is a forest fire, go to the beach. The taxi or someone will come for you. Please call when you get back to town if possible.
China Poot Bay is a very remote site; there is cell phone reception on the beach with some services you may need to go to the mouth of the bay to get reception. There is some boat traffic in the bay however, so use the flares to signal for help if you have trouble.
Remember that the tides are big in the bay. Tie your boat up high on the beach. Don�t let it go out with the tide!!
The outhouse at this point is an open throne at the campground. We will be making a new one but it is not completed at this writing. There is paper in the yurt. We ask that you don�t put paper in the hole. Please either burn it or pack it out with you when you leave.
