Alaska Yurt Rental Description of Kayak Beach:
Kayak Beach yurt is located on the left side Eldred Passage as you approach from Homer. After passing Sadie Cove on the left, look for a finger of rock (most often with an eagle sitting on it) also on the left. See Map.
Give the rock a wide birth there are rocks just like it off the point underwater. Directly following the rock spire there is a little cove. The state park campground is located there and there is a triangular trailhead marker marking the spot. There is a large rock under the surface in the middle of the beach that is visible only at low tide. Be sure to approach the beach from either side. The yurt is located down the beach to the left about 100 yards and tucked back against the rock wall of the quarry.
The yurt is furnished with a wood stove and three full size sleeping platforms with mattresses. The beds are set up in a semi circle around the wood stove. There will be a small table. We leave an axe and a handsaw in the yurt and we also provide split firewood when we maintain the yurts once a week or so. If there is none cut when you arrive there is lots of wood in the area. We ask that you leave dry kindling in the yurt for the next group. Please also give the place a sweep and leave it nice for the next group in.
We will leave a dipping utensil and a water jug in the yurt. There is water at the campground, but we recommend that everyone bring their own water. Go up the Grace Ridge trail past the State Park outhouse and there is a marker about 25 yards up on the right. The water must be boiled for 15 minutes to be safe. We will leave a one burner stove and a pot for boiling water in the yurt. We ask that you cook at the fire pit to keep the food smells away from the yurt. Please store your food in the provided bear resistant storage container. Please do not leave garbage in the storage container and wipe up any spills with the provided wipes. Please come prepared with the minimum necessary equipment for independent camping in case anything is missing. Its a good idea to have someone from your party run over and check the yurt while you are off loading from the water taxi. We leave the yurts unlocked and leave the key inside so that you can secure your things when you leave the yurt. Please leave the yurt unlocked when your stay is over and leave the key on the table or bunk in the yurt. Be extra careful not to lock yourself out of the yurt. If you do, the fix is easy. Simply unzip the yurt from the outside (the zipper is just to the right of the door under the yurt panel flap) then reach in and unlock the door.
We will leave a first aid kit and emergency flares as well as a noisemaker in the yurt. There are black bears in the park and the occasional brown bear. The bears are generally not accustomed to people and there have been no reports of garbage bear problems so far. Use common sense when in bear country, keeping cooking away from your camp site when ever possible.Keep a clean camp with food stored in the provided container. The noisemakers and the flares can deter a curious bear. The yurt has 350 lbs per square inch puncture resistance on the outer cover and they need to get through 3 layers and lattice to get through the wall. You would have lots of time to scare bears away with flares and noisemakers. It is a good idea to make noise on the trail also so as not to surprise the wildlife.
Be very careful with fire during the dry times. If there is a fire, go to the beach. The taxi or someone will come for you. Please call us when you get to town and let us know you are back if there is a fire. (235-0132)
There is cell phone reception at Kayak Beach out by the point . There is boat traffic in the passage, so use the flares to signal for help if you have trouble.
Remember that the tides are big in the bay. Tie your boats up high. Don't let it go out with the tide!!
The outhouse is to the left of the yurt when you are facing the yurt about 50 yards away. There is paper in the outhouse. We ask that you don't put paper in the hole. Please either burn it or pack it out with you when you leave.
Nomad Shelter yurts are a private permitted concession in the park. We work in partnership with the parks to provide a safe, comfortable camping experience. We hope you will abide by the state park rules. We will leave a copy of those rules in the yurt.
We look forward to making this experience better every year by soliciting your suggestions. There is a journal in the yurt and we appreciate your thoughts and comments.
Thanks again for your support and patronage. Have fun!
